Environmental Toxins and Autoimmune Disease

Pizzorno+-+Smiling%2C+Trimmed.jpg

Autoimmune diseases, like other chronic diseases, have been soaring in all age groups the past several decades. Ever worsening nutrient deficiencies and increasing body load of toxic chemicals and metals directly correlate with the growing incidence of asthma, multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, systemic lupus erythematous, Type 1 diabetes, etc. This presentation covers the primary causes of autoimmune disease and how to use natural medicines to prevent and reverse this dysfunction of the immune system.

Dr. Joseph Pizzorno, ND is a transformational leader in medicine. As founding president of Bastyr University in 1978, he coined the term “science-based natural medicine” which set the foundation for Bastyr to become the first accredited institution in this field anywhere in the world. This validated that medicine which promotes health rather than primarily disease treatment could be credibly taught, researched and practiced. As co-author of the Textbook of Natural Medicine (first edition 1985, 5th edition 2020) he helped established the scientific foundation for health promotion medicine. With over 100,000 copies sold in 4 languages (over half to MDs), it not only helped reestablish naturopathic medicine as an important part of the healthcare system, but also provided the scientific foundation for the transformational fields of integrative and functional medicine throughout the world.

A naturopathic physician (licensed in WA state since 1975), educator, researcher and expert spokesman, he is Editor-in-Chief of PubMed-indexed IMCJ, Board Chair of the Institute for Functional Medicine, founding board member of American Herbal Pharmacopeia, and a member of the science boards of the Hecht Foundation, Gateway for Cancer Research and Bioclinic Naturals. He was appointed by Presidents Clinton and Bush to 2 prestigious government commissions to advise the President and Congress on how to integrate natural medicine into the healthcare system. He is author or co-author of 6 textbooks for doctors (most recent Clinical Environmental Medicine) and 7 consumer books (Encyclopedia of Natural Medicine [>2 million copies in 6 languages]; most recent, The Toxin Solution).

PANDAS/PANS and Autoimmune Encephalitis

OHara+pic.jpg

Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders associated with Streptococcal Infections, or (PANDAS) and Pediatric Acute-onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS are autoimmune disorders that present with physiological, behavioral, and cognitive challenges. Acute onset of symptoms such as OCD, tics, anxiety, bedtime fears, inability to control urination, aggression, and deficits in learning, attention, and social interaction are among the many manifestations that result from PANDAS/PANS and impair the daily functioning and cognitive progress for many children. These symptoms manifest from Strep, Lyme, Viruses, Mycoplasma and other germs, which can lead to Autoimmune Encephalitis.  Thorough clinical evaluation combined with a comprehensive treatment approach that focuses on antimicrobial and immune-modulating therapy can transform PANDAS/PANS a devastating illness into a treatable condition.

Nancy O’Hara, MD, MPH, FAAP is a board certified Pediatrician. Prior to her medical career, Dr. O’Hara taught children with autism. She graduated with highest honors from Bryn Mawr College and as a member of the Alpha Omega Alpha Honor Society from the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. She earned a Master’s degree in Public Health from the University of Pittsburgh. After residency, chief residency and general pediatric fellowship at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. O’ Hara entered general private practice in 1993, and in 1998 began her consultative, integrative practice solely for children with special needs. Since 1999 she has dedicated her functional medicine practice to the integrative and holistic care of children with chronic illness and neurodevelopmental disorders such as ADHD, PANDAS/PANS, OCD, Lyme and ASD. She is also a leader in the training of clinicians, both in the United States and abroad.

Kiran Krishnan, Research Microbiologist

Gut-Immune Axis: How the Microbiome Shapes the Systemic Immune Response in Health and Disease

Kiran_Headshot+new.jpg

It is estimated that over 80% of our immune tissue is found in the gastrointestinal tract. This same space is occupied by over 40 trillion microorganisms, practically from the day we are born. Overwhelming scientific evidence illustrates the critical role these microbes play in both the function and dysfunction of the immune system. Microbiome-initiated immunological dysregulation is a primary cause of many non-infectious diseases such as autoimmunity, allergies, asthma, and cancer.

This talk will discuss the role of the microbiome in the development and function of the adaptive and innate immune system and their ability to respond to challenge. The talk will also focus on the key molecular pathways that mediate the host-microbiome interactions that regulate daily and homeostatic immune function. The talk will cover the types of microbiome disruptions that lead to immunological dysregulation and an inability to mount an effective response. We will also discuss the role of the microbiome in the recovery from infection and the resulting tissue damage. Finally, we will discuss some potential microbiome-targeted, therapeutic approaches to improve immune function and reduce the risk for dysregulation.

Kiran Krishnan is a Research Microbiologist and has been involved in the dietary supplement and nutrition market for the past 20 years. He comes from a strict research background having spent several years with hands-on R&D in the fields of molecular medicine and microbiology at the University of Iowa. He left University research to take several leadership positions in global companies in Business Development and Product Development. Most recently, Kiran is a Co-Founder and the Chief Scientific Officer at Microbiome Labs, a leader in microbiome and probiotic research. He is a frequent lecturer on the human microbiome at medical and nutrition conferences. He is an expert guest on national radio and satellite radio and has been a guest speaker on several health summits as a microbiome expert. He is currently involved in over 18 novel human clinical trials on probiotics and the human microbiome. Kiran is also on the Scientific Advisory Board for 7 other companies in the industry. Kiran has published clinical trials in peer-reviewed, scientific journals and has several global patents in his name.
