Drug-Induced Nutrient Depletions
This presentation will describe some of the most common and problematic nutrient depletions linked to medications. We will then focus on co-q10, an essential antioxidant impacted by many disease states and therapies.
Kevin Hoey is a pharmacist and owner of Hoey Apothecary. Hoey Apothecary first opened its doors in Madison in 2013. However, the precursor to Hoey Apothecary was Door Creek Pharmacy, which Kevin and Janell opened in Cottage Grove in 1996. They first became introduced to compounding through a young pharmacist who worked at Door Creek Pharmacy for several years. After dabbling a little, they realized the value of compounding and the necessity of having the proper space and equipment in order to compound correctly, safely and effectively.
In 2003, they built their first dedicated compounding lab within the pharmacy. Since then, they have continued to grow and invest in their lab to enable them to produce the highest quality products. In addition to investing in the lab and equipment, they have been continuously investing in their knowledge and experience in compounding practices. Currently, they have four licensed pharmacists on staff, each with their own area of expertise, making for a huge wealth of knowledge that they can dedicate to solving unique problems.
Christina Barnett was first inspired by compounding pharmacy while still in high school. Since earning her Doctorate of Pharmacy at the University of Kansas, she has held unique and diverse roles in the compounding-pharmacy community. She has designed and delivered compounding courses for the Professional Compounding Centers of America and MD Anderson Cancer Center, where she modernized the sterile-compounding training program for over 500 pharmacy team members. Chris also built her own compounding pharmacy so she could collaborate directly with patients and healthcare providers. It was in this role Chris recognized how beneficial a patient-consultation program can be, both for the pharmacy’s patients and for the business itself, but it also demonstrated how the the dual roles of “pharmacist” and “business owner” often compete. Having sold her pharmacy to focus on the clinical role, she now partners with established pharmacies (like Hoey Apothecary) to host private consultations with patients to optimize their wellness and support the growth of the pharmacy.
